Youthful Skin from the Inside Out: Fruits and Veggies for Non-Aging Skin

We all seek smooth, lustrous skin that looks like it did when we were twenty something, even if we are many years older. Is it dependent on an array of expensive creams, toners, and bases, all masking and covering a skin that, on its own, can be less than pretty to look at?

Is that what beauty becomes as the years go by us? Enhanced painting ability, while the thing being painted decreases in quality day by day?

It doesn’t have to be. Work at beautifying your skin from the inside out. One way of doing that is by feeding your skin what it needs, by eating it yourself: a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help your skin stay healthy, elastic, and vibrant, whatever your age.

Which fruits and vegetables are most important in keeping our skin from aging? For a good dose of antioxidants, try plums, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. These morsels of goodness have been identified as having the highest antioxidant levels of any food in existence. Antioxidants help defeat free radicals, which are usually formed by sun or by exposure to radiation. If left to do what they will, these free radicals will enter your skin cells and mess with the DNA, causing age-related blemishes or growths on your skin.

Then there’s broccoli. Broccoli, besides boasting a fair dose of antioxidants, is also high in vitamins C, and E. Vitamin E also works to protect your skin from ultra violet radiation, and it is used to make strong cell membranes. Your body needs vitamin C to make the collagen in your skin, keeping it supple, elastic, and wrinkle free. Can you think of other vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables? Yes, oranges, lemons and grapefruit are big ones.

Celery is another one which will cleanse your skin from the inside out, making it clear, vibrant, and youthful looking. This tangy vegetable is high in antioxidants, so you get protection from the free radicals looking to create skin blemishes. Then the vitamins it contains, A, B, C, and K, will help fix any damages that are already there, create collagen so your skin stays supple and elastic , and keep it all generally healthy. Vitamin A also helps keep your body’s production of melanin under control, taking care of those unsightly dark spots or over-done freckles. Vitamin K can lighten those dark rings around your eyes. But that’s not all. Celery also contains essential minerals which will make your skin positively glow with good health.

You’ve heard of cucumber masks in beauty salons, but you don’t have to lie in bed for hours with slices of cucumber all over your face for this vegetable to do its work. Try it internally. Cucumbers contain vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, and pantothenic acid, which helps your skin stay moist. It also has its antioxidants; in particular, two special ones that work to stop the skin from aging, cucurbitacins and cucumerin.
This is only the tip of the iceberg of the benefits that a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables can give to your skin. If you really care about looking younger, you’ll skip the salty, oily processed foods in your daily diet and turn to vitamin rich, antioxidant laden fruits and vegetables instead.
